Every farmer knows that good soil is the foundation of a healthy harvest. But across West Rural St. Andrew, our farmers are feeling the pressure. Fertilizer costs continue to rise, and the burden is becoming too much to bear. Families are working harder and earning less. The system is not working for them.
But there is a better way.
I am proposing the creation of a Community Compost Cooperative. This is a sustainable, affordable, and forward-thinking solution that will give our farmers access to high-quality, organic fertilizer made right here in the constituency.
It is a simple idea with powerful potential. We can turn organic waste into rich compost. We can reduce our dependence on costly chemical fertilizers. And we can support our farmers while protecting our environment.
Turning Waste Into Opportunity
Every day, food scraps, plant trimmings, and crop waste are thrown away. But these materials are not useless. They are full of life. With the right knowledge and tools, we can transform this waste into a resource that strengthens our soil and boosts our yields.
Here is how the Compost Cooperative will work:
- We will collect organic waste from homes, markets, farms, and schools
- We will process that waste into nutrient-rich compost using sustainable methods
- We will distribute compost to farmers and school gardens at an affordable cost
- We will create training programs to teach soil health, composting, and sustainable farming
- We will generate local jobs in waste collection, compost processing, and community education
This is about building something that serves both our people and our planet.
Why It Matters
This initiative gives our farmers the tools they need to reduce costs and improve productivity. It helps our environment by cutting down on pollution and illegal dumping. It brings our community together in a shared mission to live more sustainably.
Most of all, it shows what is possible when we stop waiting for outside help and begin building solutions from the ground up.
This is not just good policy. It is the kind of smart, practical, community-first leadership that I believe in.
